Our Services
As Union registered for the senior staff in the Construction Industry in Nigeria, our services among others include:
1. Organisation of workers who are qualified
It is the duty of CCESSA to organize and inaugurate chapters of the association in all Construction & Civil Engineering, and allied companies in Nigeria.
To this end, today there are over 70 companies under CCESSA. It is your right as workers in the industry to belong to this Association. The Nigeria constitution and the labour laws provide you the opportunity to exercise that right. no Employer can stop you from belonging to a union. Therefore, in joining CCESSA, you have not committed a crime, and no one can victimize any one merely because he is a member of a union.
2. Regulation of relationship between workers and employers and professional practice
The founding fathers of the association must have envisaged a kind of conflict between workers and their employers. Of course, unionism, in addition to fighting for the welfare of the workers, naturally aims at striking a balance between the workforce and the employers. This is the reason for establishing grievance procedures. There is hardly any affiliate member of CCESSA which has not enjoyed responsible intervention of CCESSA in one form or the other for the resolution of their internal conflict. That the management of such companies and the senior staff alike express appreciation for such positive intervention shows that the objective No.2 for CCESSA is on good course.
3. Establishment, maintenance of just and proper hours of work, rates or pay and condition of work
An average unionist knows that questions coming from the members of his union are almost always going to revolve around welfare package; i.e. the hours and benefits for foreseeable and unforeseeable events. The importance for this objective of the union has led to the setting up of National Joint Industrial Council (NJIC) charged with the responsibility of fashioning out collective agreements that will address the issues that affect workers and employers.
CCESSA represent workers and FOCI (Federation of Construction Industry) represent employers. This NJIC sets the minimum standard for both employees and employers to comply with. The latest edition of the NJIC is that of 2009 and it regulates such items as:
– Probationary period
– Hours of work
– Method of payment of salary/salary structure
– Maternity leave etc.
NJIC addresses at least 48 issues that affect workers life. This is to ensure that no workers are taken for a ride by any employers. As our policy, we encourage senior staff to realize that they are projection of management and therefore they must be shining examples of their junior counterparts. The senior staff must realize that responsibility is their lot. Therefore, we do not condone laziness, indolence etc.
It is our duty to strike a balance between workforce and employer, because the work is as important as the worker.
4. Establishment and maintenance of a high standard of Workmanship and professional practice
In this area, it is the employers however, who can determine their standard but on the part of the senior staff association, it has been our policy not to support any member found to be incompetent in his chosen area. Therefore, as educated and responsible staff, provided with an enabling environment, every senior staff should strive to excel in his chosen field.
5. Advancement of education and training of the workers
The policy of training and retraining to produce competent and responsible senior staff has been part and parcel of the programme of CCESSA. In addition to seminars and workshop, the association has also seriously persuaded the employers to send staff for training. Furthermore, the association encourages on-the=job training, which is being undertaken by some of the companies.
6. Provision of benefits and other assistance to the members
These benefits include for instance long service awards, merit awards, death benefits and sickness benefits. CCESSA encourages affiliate companies to record excellence.
To answer the first and only question “who are we” I will say we are a responsible intermediary between the workers and the employers to ensure productivity, excellence and responsibility.
